Since I was a little girl, I have always loved the tv show Bewitched, starring the beautiful and talent Elizabeth Montgomery. Yes, I’ve only ever seen reruns since the show went out of production when I was only a year old, but nevertheless it’s been a favorite of mine from a very young age. Recently I have bought all the seasons on iTunes and am rewatching them. Surprisingly, I think I’ve seen them all over the years, but watching them now I find myself marveling at how simple life was then.
I admit part of me would love to go back in time to that period. Another part…Well, I hate to say it but I’d have turned Darren into a toad at least two dozen times ☺ , and I don’t think that is all due to my more modern sensibilities. Though I will admit, there are times when it is exactly that. Times were definitely different back then. I can remember my grandfather talking to my grandmother similarly, but if my husband spoke to me like that…well, let’s just say, he would not have been my husband and very best friend for the past 25 years.
Aside from the fact that Samantha took a lot of stuff from Darren that I would not put up with, I still wish I could go back in time, and not just because I love the clothes she wore. Though the fashions in the late 60’s ( the early 70’s…yeah not so much) were to die for. I wouldn’t even mind being a housewife, though I have to admit, I hate cooking and I would definitely be zapping dinner instead of preparing it by hand.
I think the thing I like best about it is that there was no cell phone and no social media. You had to get out and meet people and talk to them in person back then. Don’t get me wrong there are definite advantages to our modern technologies. I love access to information for research, and I love being able to communicate with readers, but there is something to be said for actual face-to-face communication. As most of you probably know, I’m not a fan of social media; I find it a necessary evil. I admit, I am a bit of an old fogey.
In all honesty, as much as I romanticize giving up technology, I’m not entirely sure I would. Knowledge is an addicting thing and I am rather fond of all the education the internet provides. From how to YouTube videos, to articles on historical events, the web is a fount of information. It really comes in handy for a writer. It’s hard to imagine running off to the library every time you want to know something or tracking down an expert in their field. So with that, I have to say perhaps it would be best to just visit other time periods. But, I suppose that is exactly what old shows are a trip back in time. Some of my other favorite classics are I Love Lucy, Leave It To Beaver, My Three Sons, The Brady Bunch, The Andy Griffith Show, and Gidget.
Ahhh… So many good shows, so little time! If you have not watched old sitcoms, I urge you to do so. They are very entertaining and enlightening. If nothing else they will help you appreciate what you have in your own life. Or perhaps they will spark a sense of nostalgia. Either way, it’s time well spent…sort of like reading a good book 😉
